Grease Gun Usage Guide
We compiled the most frequently asked questions on grease guns, and hopefully it's enough to cover all your questions! Let us know if there's anything missing.
1. Insert the Grease Cartridge
Unscrew the head from the barrel, pull the handle to the end, then insert the grease cartridge or fill bulk grease in.
2. Screw the Head Back Onto the Cylinder.
Then go back about half a turn so you can let the air out.
3. Push down the T-handle and Press the Tab
Push down the T-handle, release the spring by pressing the tab, which pushes the grease in.
4. Ready to Lubricate
Tips: If the coupler can't be released from the connector, you can gently pull up and down or unscrew it to make it easy to remove.

It's a mystery
Our couplers fit all 1/8 NPT extension pipe and flex hose of standard grease guns. Max working pressure is 8,000 PSI.
Double handle coupler fits all 1/8 NPT threads too, the max pressure is 10,000 PSI.
- Utool grease guns fit standard 14 OZ cartridges. However, it is important to check that the size range does not exceed that of the Utool grease gun, as cartridge sizes vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Furthermore, a smaller cartridge will cause more cyclones inside the body of the gun, so it is not advisable to use one.
Our 14-ounce pistol grease gun dispenses approximately 0.8 grams of grease per pump. Please note that while the volume dispensed per pump remains constant, the specific volume may vary slightly due to the different densities of various greases.
The density of grease affects the relationship between its weight and volume.
For example:
- Greases with higher density are heavier for the same volume.
- Greases with lower density are lighter for the same volume.
Therefore, you may observe slight variations in the volume of different types of grease dispensed during actual use. This is a normal occurrence and does not affect the overall performance of the grease gun.
Possibility 1: Air lockAir Lock is one of the most common reasons for grease guns no longer pumping grease.
To fix this, try the following:
- Bleed the Air: Press the Air Release Valve to allow air to escape. If there is too much blocked air, unscrew the grease gun head (barrel) slightly to let the air out and then tighten it again.
- Prime the Pump: After bleeding the air, prime the pump by pulling the plunger rod back and then pushing it forward again.
Possibility 2:Blocked Grease Path
A blockage in the grease path can prevent grease from flowing.
Check the following:
- Couple and Hose: Ensure the coupler (nozzle) and hose are not clogged. Clean them thoroughly to remove any old or hardened grease.
- Zerk Fitting: Check the Zerk fitting to ensure it is not clogged. If it is, clean or replace the fitting.
Possibility 3:Grease Cartridge Issues
Problems with the grease cartridge can also cause issues:
- Correct Installation: Ensure the grease cartridge is installed correctly. Remove and reinsert the cartridge, making sure the pull tab is completely removed, and the cartridge is seated properly.
- Grease Consistency: Check the consistency of the grease. If the grease has hardened or separated, it may not pump properly. In this case, replace the cartridge with fresh grease.
Possibility 1: Air lock
Air pockets in the grease can cause a reduction in the volume pumped.
Possibility 3: Grease Consistency
The type or condition of the grease can impact the volume.
- Grease Consistency: Check the consistency of the grease. If the grease has hardened or separated, it may not pump properly. In this case, replace the cartridge with fresh grease.
Possibility 4: Incorrect Assembly
Incorrect assembly of the grease gun can lead to reduced performance.
- Reassemble the Grease Gun: Disassemble and reassemble the grease gun according to our product manual, ensuring all parts are correctly fitted and tightened.
It's possible that the cartridge size is wrong, or it had been damaged.
1. Check and use the right cartridge size.
2. Apply grease on plunger and cartridge end to ease entering the tube.
3. Use a new grease cartridge.
4. Remove the used cartridge from tube when bulk loading.
1. Release Pressure: Ensure the grease gun's pressure is fully released. If it's a lever-type, depress the handle to release any remaining pressure.
2. Wiggle and Twist: Gently wiggle and twist the spout while pulling it away from the grease nipple. This can help loosen any tight connections.
3. Lubricate Connection: Apply a small amount of penetrating oil or lubricant to the connection between the spout and the grease nipple. Let it sit for a few minutes to loosen the grip.
4. Use Pliers Carefully: If the spout is still stuck, use a pair of pliers to carefully grip and twist the spout while pulling it away from the grease nipple. Be cautious not to damage the nipple or the spout.
Possibility 1: Improper Alignment
Proper alignment of the coupler with the Zerk fitting is essential for a secure connection.
- Align Correctly: Make sure the coupler is aligned straight with the Zerk fitting before attempting to jam it on. Misalignment can prevent the coupler from attaching securely to the fitting.
Possibility 2: Debris or Contamination
Dirt, grease, or other debris can obstruct the connection between the coupler and the Zerk fitting.
- Clean Thoroughly: Clean both the Zerk fitting and the coupler to ensure there are no obstructions. Use a clean rag to wipe away any debris or old grease.
